Took time off from work today because we needed to bring L back for a review from her previous tooth extraction. We had some time to spare after her checkup (wound site is healing well AND her teeth looks clean, thank god!) so hub asked me if I had anywhere I wanted to go after that. I thought for awhile and AHA! Remembered this place that I had always wanted to go whenever we drove past.
I didn't want to go Waffletown because they were selling delicious waffles. It was more for a revist to a place that I didn't have the opportunity to go last time. Like retrieving a piece of memory that I left behind a long time ago.
When I was younger (like waaaay younger in Sec school days), school was somewhere in the hills of Bukit Timah. My memory is quite blurry now, but I remembered one of our fav school haunts then would be hanging out at KAP (King Albert Park McD) after school. And once in a not too long while, we'd take a bus and head towards Bukit Timah Shopping Centre (BTSC) further down.
Waffletown was situated at the basement of BTSC. Amongst other things, it sold a wide variety of waffles, both sweet and savoury. To a girl of about 15 years old, that place was a wonderland!
I remembered always walking past it wide-eyed and with envy. Coming from a family that wasn't well-off, splurging that amount on a (very deliciously looking) waffle when that same amount could actually buy me a meal, was unthinkable. So, (as the sensible girl that I was then,) I didn't self indulge as much as my heart wished.
Soon after I graduated from my 'O's, I studied some place far away from Bukit Timah and its hills. Gradually, Waffletown with all its delicious array of forbidden waffles were forgotten and lost in memory.
It was only after I got married and moved out, and during our drives around, that I chanced upon Waffletown again. This time, it had moved to Balmoral Plaza.
And so that day, I revisited Waffletown with a school-girlish excitement, knowing that in this overdue trip, I would be able to order whatever I desired!
Alas, our stomachs were still quite full from lunch and so, we only ended up ordering an ice-cream waffle, and a 2pc meal.
It was a cloudy and cooling day, and sitting by the roadside, we had a clear view of the cars zooming pass.
The kids dug into their waffle with gusto.
While papa said that their chicken was only so-so and that they used (horrors!!) frozen chicken (not good).
I enjoyed the experience (and view) with my cuppa.
While the verdict wasn't on the food, (which in truth was only very average,) I managed to retrive little pieces of memories of my long ago schooling days. And of course, fulfil an overdue whim.
I may come back again in future when I am famished just so I could order a variety of waffles, but at this moment, I am contented.
